IMF Urges Pakistan to Expand Tax Base

According to information obtained from the Pakistani newspaper "The Nation", the International Monetary Fund insists that Pakistan expand its tax base by including previously untapped sources of income. A group of IMF experts, led by Nathan Porter, recently completed a working visit to Pakistan from November 12 to 15, where they met with senior representatives of the federal and regional governments, the State Bank of Pakistan, as well as representatives of the private sector.

As a result of the visit, Porter issued a statement in which he said: "We held constructive discussions with the authorities regarding their economic policy, reforms to address weaknesses, and the foundation for stronger and sustainable growth. We agreed on the necessity of continuing prudent monetary and fiscal policies, identifying untapped sources of tax revenues, and also transferring a larger amount of social and developmental obligations to the regions."
