The United Nations Security Council strongly condemned the terrorist attack that targeted a mosque in the capital Islamabad on February 6, which resulted in the deaths of at least 32 people and injuries to 92 others. In a statement issued on Friday, Council members described the attack, for which ISIS claimed responsibility, as a "cowardly and heinous" act. The Council expressed its deepest condolences to the victims' families, the government and people of Pakistan, and wished the injured a speedy recovery. The Council affirmed that terrorism in all its forms constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, stressing the need to hold the perpetrators, organizers, and financiers of this attack accountable and bring them to justice. The statement also called on all states to cooperate fully with Pakistani authorities to ensure that the perpetrators do not escape punishment in accordance with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions. The Council reaffirmed that any terrorist act is an inexcusable crime, regardless of its motives or the forces behind it, and emphasized the importance of states continuing their efforts to combat terrorism by all legitimate means in accordance with the UN Charter and international law, including international human rights law and international humanitarian law.
